Have a SPAMTASTIC™ Picnic Week!

Monday 16 June 2014

It's National Picnic Week from the 16th to the 22nd of June  and there is no better meat for a quick and easy alfresco feast than SPAM® Chopped Pork and Ham.

Convenient, easy to prepare and uniquely tasty, SPAM® Chopped Pork and Ham is now available in an easy-to-open and lightweight plastic tub, which is perfect for picnics, BBQs and camping.  The traditional can is also available.

Made from a minimum of 90% shoulder pork and ham, SPAM® Chopped Pork can be sliced to make tasty SPAM® Sandwiches or diced to create a delicious SPAM® Summer Salad.

So, before you grab your picnic blanket and head to the park, check out the below recipe which is guaranteed to make your Picnic Week a SPAMTASTIC™ one.

*Spam with Mustard Mayo Sandwich*
Serves 4
Printable Recipe

1 (200g) tub or can of SPAM® Chopped Pork and Ham, chopped into smallcubes
4 large hard boiled eggs, finely chopped
1 heaped TBS of mayonnaise
1 tsp wholegrain mustard (optional)
1 TBS chopped chives
1 pack of mustard cress or fresh salad leaves
8 slices of bread from a large loaf (white, 50/50 or wholegrain)

Put the chopped SPAM® and hard boiled eggs into a mixing bowl.  Add the mayonnaise, wholegrain mustard and chopped chives.  Stir well until everything is well coated with the mayonnaise.  Spread the mixture onto 4 slices of bread. Put a layer of cress or salad leaves on top of the SPAM® mixture and then place the other slice on top of the salad.  Cut into diagonals and serve.

Note - I would butter the slices of bread first with softened butter to help to keep the bread from going soggy.

The 200g tub is currently available in the UK from Tesco and Asda.  200g and 340g cans are also available from all major UK supermarkets.

  1. Usually, I love the recipes on your blog..... but SPAM??????
It is one of those products that should have Britain agreeing with the French over the UK's food. It was, is and always will be DISGUSTING - a fore-runner of extruded meat products, artifically pink, no texture, greasy and the nightmare that was Tuesday school lunch for me for 5 years. It should be illegal! LOL.
Sorry, but I just had to say it.
THOSE WHO HAVE NEVER EATEN THIS STUFF AND WANT TO TRY IT--KEEP A BUCKET CLOSE BY!

  2. haha Jenann, I suppose it is all a matter of taste. There are plenty of people who really love the stuff. We happen to be two of them. They do make a lower fat version now. I think if you prepare it properly, it can be quite tasty. I love spam fried rice. It's gorgeous.

  3. PS - I also posted a gorgeous recipe this morning for Cherry Danish Turnovers, so it's not all bad Jenann!

  4. I've been following your blog and trying your recipes for quite some time now, and I really like them. I just think if you're going to make a sponsored post, you should at least respect your readers and say let it be very clear from the start. For me, at least, this is strike nº1 before stopping following you.

  5. As regular readers you would or should recognize that this isn't the first time I have shown recipes with Spam in them.

Secondly the word SPAMTASTIC with the trademark is right in the post title! That should be obvious from the get go that this is a post about Spam.

Thirdly this is not my main post for the day. My main post today was about Cherry Danish Turnovers. I find it really weird that none of you would take the time to comment on that post, but so obviously feel the need to slam me on this one.

Also you are all quite rude. This is my kitchen. Coming in here and slamming what I show you is like coming into my kitchen and telling me my cooking is crap. It's just not necessary. If you don't like what you see, you don't have to read. It's as simple as that. There is no need for being rude or obnoxious.

There are plenty of people out there in the world who do like Spam and who will find this post quite informative.

We're all entitled to our opinions and voice! You don't like Spam and that's okay! We do. And that's okay. Have a nice day!

  6. Aw, I'm so sorry!
It wasn't meant to be offensive, only as a joke and I do no people who like the stuff, including my 91 year old mother. Spam was a mainstay in the years of WW2 when she was a young woman. But, boy! those school dinner cooks could make it into something awful by deep frying it in batter and thoose of us around to suffer it in the 50s/60s have not recovered from it enough to ever try it again.
Please forgive me and loow me back into your kitchen. You are right, if I was in your bricks and mortar kitchen, I wouldn't dream of critisizing the menu and it was rude of me to say anything negative.

  7. Jenann, that's okay. I accept your apology. Thank you so much. I did take your comment with a bit of a laugh. The Toddster endured years of school dinners so he can certainly empathise with how terrible they truly were! You are welcome in my kitchen anytime. I appreciate you coming back that means a lot to me. I do work really hard on my page. I don't get paid to do it. It's a labour of love for me. Perhaps I need a thicker skin!

  8. I like Spam from time to time, and you're right about Spam fried rice - it's good! I grew up eating it because it was economical and versatile. I've always liked the taste, but I tend to buy the lower sodium version. Spam musubi in Hawaii is also rather nice!

  9. Thank you Nar. Spam musubi sounds like an interesting dish. I am going to look that one up! Thanks for sharing!

  10. I too have noticed the increase of product(s) endorsements on your blog. You kindly buffer it with lovely recipes and pictures so thank you for that. However, in a world riddled with ads, I wanted the comfort of a friendly blog with lovely doable recipes which you have long provided. I will accept your invitation to stop reading your blog, with regret.

  11. I found it fascinating, when my sister told me about Hawaii after a visit, how many types of Spam there were. They had 8+ types on the shelf at the grocery store, so obviously a lot of Hawaiians LOVE their Spam too.

  12. Thanks Anna, you are right! They love Spam in Hawaii! I am not sure why that is, but every culture has their own nuances and oddities!

Doris, I am really sad that you feel the way you do, but you have to do what you have to do.

I have gone over my posts for the past 18 days. I have posted 35 recipes in 18 days, out of those 35 recipes there has been ONE post giving everyone the opportunity to win a Tefal Optigrill, and SEVEN product reviews, that means that in 18 days you have gotten TWENTY SEVEN recipes.

One of the perks of being a successful blogger is that I have the chance to try new things and you, my readers, have the chance to read real bona fide reviews of the things I try. Some bloggers just write what nice things without ever trying out the cookbooks, or products they have been sent. I actually try them and then I let you know if I like them or not. Occasionally I do get a post which is a paid post. Maintaining this page costs me a lot of money and time. Yes, it is a labour of love and I would always do it no matter what, but it is hard work and it's nice to be somewhat reimbursed from time to time. These small opportunities in no way even begin to cover the costs of maintaining such a page but they help.

It's unfortunate that you feel the way you do Doris, but that's life I guess, and as in everything . . . life will go on, with or without you. Have a nice day.
