The Best Tartar Sauce

 The Best Tartar Sauce

The recipe I am sharing today is one I developed when I worked down South at the Manor. I used to make it when I was making them Cod Cakes or even just pan frying fish. They loved it. No surprise there. It's totally delicious!  Homemade Tartar Sauce from scratch tastes infinitely better than anything mass produced!!

The Best Tartar Sauce

I made this to go with some simple frozen fish and chips last week, having been inspired by the inclusion of some lovely looking gherkins in my May Degustabox.  The theme for May was Brunch & Afternoon Tea!

Every month I am the lucky recipient of a Degustabox.  Once a month, around the middle of the month, I am sent one of these lovely boxes which contain a delicious assortment of all things foodie.  I just love these boxes. Opening each one is tiny a bit like opening a Christmas gift. Always a surprise, and always filled with things that pique my interest and desire to try. Degustabox is a monthly foodie subscription service that sends out a range of 10 to 15 specially selected foodie products.

There's always a great mix of new products that I haven't tried before, as well as plenty of treats from more established brands. Quite often you will have the opportunity to try  new products before they arrive in the shops, so it can be a bit of a sneak peak! Each Degustabox costs only £12.99, delivery costs are included in the price, and there is no fixed contract involved. You can cancel at any time. I love getting these boxes! In my opinion, they are great value for money spent.  This month I can even offer you a discount. (more about that below)
And now a bit of what was included in the May box.

KUHNE Gin & Whiskey Cornichons 1 X £2.59

This is a new and very interesting product that I had never seen before and this is the one I chose to highlight with a recipe.  These tasty cornichons come refined with either Gin or Whiskey.

They went perfectly in this quick and easy tartar sauce recipe!  I had the Whiskey ones.  The flavour of the whiskey is very subtle and not smack you in the face. Very nice.

Of course you will want a good quality mayo for this.  I use Hellman's, always . . . I just personally like the texture and flavour of it.  I had almost been doing to use the Vegan one in this, but didn't because this isn't really a Vegan friendly recipe as it also included prepared creamed horseradish.

There is also a quantity of chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley  . . .

As well as finely chopped fresh celery . . .

Fresh lemon juice and dry mustard powder, along with some seasoning . . .

The Best Tartar Sauce

It goes together in a flash.  I do like to make it an hour or so before I need it, chilling it covered in the refrigerator.  That way the flavours really have time to meld together perfectly.

This is THE perfect Tartar Sauce!

The Best Tartar Sauce

It has the capacity to even lift plain old battered frozen fish and chips.  Yes, even I resort to that from time to time, especially if I am having an ultra busy week! I'm only human!  This tartar sauce is also delicious on a fish finger sandwich!

The Best Tartar Sauce

Yield: Approximately 4 servings
Author: Marie Rayner
Once you taste this you'll never eat tartar sauce from a squeeze bottle or jar again. This is the best.

ingredients:

  • 1 stalk of celery, chopped fine
  • 2 TBS finely chopped cornichons
  • 1 TBS prepared creamed horseradish
  • 2 TBS coarsely chopped flat leaf parsley
  • 1/2 tsp dry mustard powder
  • 6 TBS good quality mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

instructions:

How to cook The Best Tartar Sauce

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a small bowl, mixing well together. Serve with fish. If not using right away, cover and chill in the refrigerator. I always like to make this a few hours ahead of time in order for the flavours to really meld well together.

    1. This wasn't fried fish Monique, just frozen ready made. Sometimes you got to do what you got to do. This tartar sauce is excellent even with poached fish or fish cakes. I miss salt cod. We always used to make our fish cakes with salt cod and potatoes. That's pretty steep for celery! Its not something you can freeze and use either. Frozen celery isn't good for much! Ouch! xoxo

  2. The celery is an interesting addition. I often replace half of the mayonnaise with greek yogurt. It adds a lighter freshness to the sauce.

    1. Yogurt is a great addition for sure Alasdair! Thanks for the input!

  3. Prepared horseradish isn't vegan friendly? I thought it was basically just horseradish root, vinegar, and salt.
